Bad luck & a race to catch up at DKM Ampfing
Somehow it just wasn’t meant to be for Henri Möhring this year. Once again, the Hessian experienced a turbulent weekend at the second round of the German Mini Kart Championship. He had every chance of victory in Ampfing, but the tide turned in qualifying. A week earlier, Henri Möhring had already been at the start on the 1,063-meter-long race track and celebrated a victory at the season opener of the South German ADAC Kart Cup. He could not have been better prepared for the second round of the German Mini Kart Championship. With almost 30 drivers, the field was once again strong.
Everything went according to plan for the ADAC Hessen-Thüringen e.V. protégé in the free practice sessions. He was one of the top drivers in the field and was highly motivated going into qualifying on Saturday. But the end came after just one lap. Henri’s fuel cap was no longer properly closed after a fuel check and he had to park his kart prematurely. “The starter broke just before qualifying. We therefore had to change the engine in a last-minute operation. In the rush of the pre-start, we then made a mistake. That will never happen to us again. Now we have to make the best of the situation,” said the nine-year-old afterwards.
Starting from 29th on the grid, he tackled the next two heats and showed a sensational race to catch up. He bounced up to 15th and eighth place. As a result, he made a big leap up the overall standings and was already back in the top ten. He continued this wild ride in the Super Heat on Sunday. Finishing fifth, he had fought back all chances of a top result in the final.
“Those were three sensational races. I’ve improved by 23 places in the After Heats ranking, with 34 overtakes in just two races and want to build on that in the final,” said Henri. The final race was turbulent at times. There was a minor interruption right at the start, after which the minis fought hard for victory. Henri was within striking distance, but a small mistake threw him back a little and he was unable to finish higher than ninth.
From June 15-16, the DKM entourage will travel on to the Oberpfalz. The DKM welcomes its drivers to the Prokart Raceland Wackersdorf for the third of a total of six events.
